The Wingmaker’s Glade

To the brave souls who dare enter the fae realm: beware the wingmakers, for they will curse you with the burden of growing their wings and will hunt you down for harvest. The woods of the unseelie folk will distract you with its unnatural beauty and unsettling familiarity, but know that such scenery only serves to divert your attention from the dangers of exploring it.

This scene is a "remake" of an old school project that I worked on with Joeanna Steuber. Together, we came up with two separate semi-realistic environments and a story inspired by Irish folklore about a child who goes back on a deal with a fae. Joeanna was responsible for some of the assets and materials in this scene, and I was responsible for creating the other assets and materials, as well as set dressing and lighting. This iteration of the project makes use of both our old assets and new ones that I decided to recreate when updating the scene.

It was excellent practice to get back into organic work and a fun challenge to see how my process of creating exterior environments changed after gaining more experience.

A collection of the new organic props that I had made as practice.

A standalone of the beech tree I had re-made as practice. I used a combination of SpeedTree and Zbrush to create the model, and both the trunk and leaves were textured in Substance Painter.

A small scene using only the assets I re-created as practice.

This project was originally created during my time at Ringling College of Art and Design, and modified later on. All assets belong to myself and project partner Joeanna Steuber. Programs used: Autodesk Maya, Zbrush, Speedtree, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Unreal Engine 4 + 5
